You can’t force comedy. It has to come naturally.

I started out in the 1970s doing the Wife, the Bimbo, and the Ditz, and if I somehow get a serious role, they all wanna know the same thing: When are you going back to comedy?

Comedy is about finding the humanity in absurd situations.

When I first started doing comedy years ago, I used to be the biggest Michael Richards fan. I used to love this dude. He was on a TV show called ‘Fridays,’ and man, he was tall and lanky – and I was tall and lanky. I love physical comedy, and he was a physical comedian, and I said, ‘Man, I love this guy.’

I’m trying to be the Jay-Z of comedy one day. I don’t know if there’s any comedy moguls out there, but I would love to be the first comedy mogul.

Comedy, we may say, is society protecting itself – with a smile.

I don’t like to be entertaining. I don’t like the feeling of being entertaining. If there was a musical or a comedy that was not just for entertainment but was rooted in something I could relate to on a real level, then I think I would do it.

In Mexico, audiences want to see a big discussion around a film – what we expect from Hollywood films worldwide is more of an entertaining show. ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ was a road movie and comedy, but it had a very strong political connotation that sparked a discussion in Mexico that is still going on.

Comedy requires a lot of energy.

In a comedy, after the day is done, you can figure out ways of how to make it even funnier for the next day. In dramas, it’s very different – the mindset that you’re in.

I like to do comedy. It’s my real passion. I want to make people laugh.

Americans don’t like puns and plays on words, which is totally opposite in the comedy world to France or even Italy and Germany.

Especially when you’re faced with hard times, you need to remember that life is either tragedy or comedy. For me, that’s what the magic is. Life has remarkable, surprising moments that get you through the hard times.

My foray into comedy was to avoid getting a job.

I started doing comedy with no plan to do voice work. Voice work came as a function of doing comedy and meeting people who eventually develop shows like that. I didn’t seek out from an early age to be on cartoons.

Voice actors I used to know who were starting out in comedy were guys who did a lot of voices. They were usually comedy actors who developed their comedy by doing tons of impressions and voices that were usually very funny. And I never did any of that, so that’s, I guess, why I don’t consider myself a voice actor.

I wasn’t classically trained as an actor; I wasn’t pursuing standup comedy. I really came into it through the back door. And there was a benefit to that, I think, because I wasn’t pressing; I wasn’t pushing.

I’m not opposed to putting myself in danger for meaningless comedy.

A lot of the comedians nowadays just do comedy as a stepping stone. Take for example Dane Cook. The guy is huge. The main reason he got into it is to do what he is doing now: film and television work.

Life is like a comedy show. Some moments are hilarious, while others are challenging. But they all contribute to the story.

I have always been told that I was a funny, entertaining person and have always been told to give comedy a try.

Drama is not my passion. If I do it, it’s for a check. It’s not what I want to do. Comedy’s my thing. Stand up’s my thing. Everything that comes from that is frosting on the cake.

Comedy is my passion. I’m going to do this until I drop.

Comedy opens up doors to speak about things that may not be easily discussed in other settings.

Comedy is acting out optimism

I probably wouldn’t be doing comedy, if it wasn’t for the fact that I was doing stand-up and getting a few gigs, while I was also applying for law internships and getting absolutely nothing.

Adult Swim has cornered this really cool market, especially for comedy shows.
