I think voters want somebody who understands their problems. You’re right that they don’t expect the president to fix everything. When he’s wrestling with Congress and Wall Street and the rest of the world, they hope he’ll be looking at things from their vantage point.

First they gerrymander us into one-party fiefs. Then they tell us they only care about the swing districts. Then they complain about voter apathy.

In short, if your average voter had five key issues in mind, scored each candidate on them, and weighted them in order of importance, it was easy to understand how perfectly reasonable and rational people might have voted for Donald Trump without being deplorable bigots.

For voters what matters is what government actually delivers for them

The internet makes it much easier for politicians to communicate directly with voters – think of the interest when David launched Webcammer, or Tony Blair’s rather embarrassing attempt to catch up on YouTube

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Voters quickly forget what a man says.

The Democratic Party is a bunch of sheep herding voters and a bunch of spoiled intellectuals who don’t have the nerve to do anything.
