Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) was a prominent American military officer and Confederate general during the American Civil War. Born in Virginia, he graduated from West Point and excelled in his early military career. Lee served in the U.S. Army, distinguishing himself in various conflicts, including the Mexican-American War. However, his loyalty to his home state led him to resign his commission and join the Confederacy during the Civil War. Lee’s military prowess was evident, and he commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. His leadership, marked by brilliant tactics, made him a revered figure among Southern troops. After the war, he advocated for reconciliation and became a symbol of the Lost Cause myth in the South.
