Theodor Herzl (1860–1904) was an Austro-Hungarian journalist and the visionary father of modern political Zionism. Born in Budapest, he became a vocal advocate for Jewish statehood, inspired by anti-Semitic experiences. In 1896, Herzl published “The Jewish State,” outlining the need for a national homeland. He convened the First Zionist Congress in 1897, laying the groundwork for the establishment of Israel. Herzl’s tireless efforts for a Jewish homeland were pivotal in shaping the Zionist movement. Despite his untimely death in 1904, his legacy endures as a driving force behind the eventual creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
We believe that salvation is to be found in wholesome work in a beloved land. Work will provide our people with the bread of tomorrow, and moreover, with the honour of the tomorrow, the freedom of the tomorrow.
Author: Theodor HerzlEvery man will be as free and undisturbed in his faith or his disbelief as he is in his nationality. And if it should occur that men of other creeds and different nationalities come to live amongst us, we should accord them honorable protection and equality before the law. We have learnt toleration in Europe. This is not sarcastically said; for the Anti-Semitism of today could only in a very few places be taken for old religious intolerance. It is for the most part a movement among civilized nations by which they try to chase away the spectres of their own past. LAWS
Author: Theodor HerzlIf you will it, it is no dream; and if you do not will it, a dream it is and a dream it will stay.
Author: Theodor HerzlIf whole branches of Jews must be destroyed, it is worth it, as long as a Jewish state in Palestine is created.
Author: Theodor HerzlDream and deed are not as different as many think. All the deeds of men are dreams at first, and become dreams in the end.
Author: Theodor HerzlWhen we sink, we become a revolutionary proletariat, the subordinate officers of all revolutionary parties; at the same time, when we rise, there rises also our terrible power of the purse.
Author: Theodor HerzlI incline to an aristocratic republic. This would satisfy the ambitious spirit among our people. We shall learn from the historic mistakes of others in the same way as we learn from our own; for we are a modern nation and wish to be the most modern in the world.
Author: Theodor HerzlUniversal brotherhood is not even a beautiful dream. Antagonism is essential to man’s greatest efforts.
Author: Theodor HerzlDo you know out of what the German Empire arose? Out of dreams, songs, fantasies and black-red-gold ribbons? Bismarck merely shook the tree that fantasies had planted.
Author: Theodor HerzlI will give you my definition of a nation, and you can add the adjective ‘Jewish.’ A Nation is, in my mind, an historical group of men of a recognizable cohesion held together by a common enemy. Then, if you add to that the word ‘Jewish’ you have what I understand to be the Jewish nation
Author: Theodor HerzlRealists are, as a rule, only men in the rut of routine who are incapable of transcending a narrow circle of antiquated notions.
Author: Theodor HerzlNothing prevents us from being and remaining the exponents of a united humanity, when we have a country of our own. To fulfill this mission we do not have to remain literally planted among the nations who hate and despise us.
Author: Theodor HerzlLet sovereignty be granted us over a portion of the earth’s surface large enough to satisfy our rightful requirements as a nation. The rest we shall manage for ourselves.
Author: Theodor HerzlZionism demands a publicly recognized and legally secured homeland in Palestine for the Jewish people. This platform is unchangeable.
Author: Theodor HerzlIt goes without saying that the Jewish people can have no other goal than Palestine and that, whatever the fate of the proposition may be, our attitude toward the land of our fathers is and shall remain unchangeable.
Author: Theodor HerzlWe believe that salvation is to be found in wholesome work in a beloved land. Work will provide our people with the bread of tomorrow, and moreover, with the honor of the tomorrow, the freedom of the tomorrow.
Author: Theodor HerzlThe Jews had, as a matter of fact, long been all along the most ingenious entrepreneurs. It was only our own future that we had never built upon a business basis.
Author: Theodor HerzlEconomic distress, political pressure, and social obloquy already drive us from our homes and from our graves. The Jews are already constantly shifting from place to place.
Author: Theodor HerzlWere I to sum up the Basle Congress in a word- which I shall guard against pronouncing publicly- it would be this: ‘At Basle, I founded the Jewish State. If I said this out loud today, I would be answered by universal laughter. If not in 5 years, certainly in 50, everyone will know it.’
Author: Theodor HerzlWhat We want is to make it possible for our unfortunate people to live a life of industry for it is by steady work alone that we hope for our physical and moral rehabilitation. For this reason above all we have undertaken to rally our people around our ideal.
Author: Theodor HerzlIf anyone thinks that Jews can steal into the land of their fathers, he is deceiving either himself or others. Nowhere is the coming of Jews so promptly noted as in the historic home of the Jews, for the very reason that it is the historic home.
Author: Theodor HerzlThe land which the Society of Jews will have secured by international law must naturally be privately owned. The land which the Society of Jews will have secured by international law must naturally be privately owned.
Author: Theodor HerzlIt is true that we aspire to our ancient land. But what we want in that ancient land is a new blossoming of the Jewish spirit.
Author: Theodor HerzlThe Jewish people asked nothing of its sons except not to be denied. The world is grateful to every great man when he brings it something; only the paternal home thanks the son who brings nothing but himself.
Author: Theodor HerzlBut we wish to give the Jews a Homeland. Not by dragging them ruthlessly out of their sustaining soil, but rather by removing them carefully, roots and all, to a better terrain.
