Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) was a prominent Prussian statesman and the first Chancellor of the German Empire. Known for his realpolitik approach, he masterminded the unification of Germany through a series of diplomatic maneuvers and wars, culminating in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Bismarck skillfully negotiated alliances, including the Triple Alliance, to maintain stability in Europe. He implemented social reforms, like the establishment of modern welfare programs, to appease the working class and counter socialist movements. Forced to resign by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1890, his legacy as an architect of modern Germany and European diplomacy endures.
