Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an American professor, writer, and mythologist, best known for his work on the structure of myth and its universal themes. His most famous book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, introduced the concept of the “monomyth” or the “hero’s journey,” a narrative pattern found across cultures and religions. Campbell’s work influenced many writers, filmmakers, and artists, including George Lucas, who credited him with shaping the Star Wars saga. Campbell believed that myths from around the world reflect the collective unconscious and shared human experiences. His ideas about storytelling and the power of myths remain widely studied today.

Freedom is found in the willingness to let go of the things that hold you back.
Author: Joseph CampbellAll the heroes of myth are really reflections of the inner journey we each must make.
Author: Joseph CampbellSuddenly you’re ripped into being alive. And life is pain, and life is suffering, and life is horror but my God you’re alive and it’s spectacular.
Author: Joseph CampbellThe goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.
Author: Joseph CampbellEvery religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble.
Author: Joseph CampbellI don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.
Author: Joseph CampbellOne way or another, we all have to find what best fosters the flowering of our humanity in this contemporary life, and dedicate ourselves to that.
Author: Joseph CampbellIs the system going to flatten you out and deny you your humanity, or are you going to be able to make use of the system to the attainment of human purposes?

The responsibility of a hero is to see things as they are, not as they should be.
Author: Joseph CampbellThe world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to become sharper.
Author: Joseph CampbellWe’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it is all about.
Author: Joseph CampbellYou know the rule: If you are falling, dive. Do the thing that has to be done.
Author: Joseph CampbellNo one in the world was ever you before, with your particular gifts and abilities and possibilities.

The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.
Author: Joseph CampbellThe hero’s journey always begins with the call. One way or another, a guide must come to say, ‘Look, you’re in Sleepy Land. Wake. Come on a trip. There is a whole aspect of your consciousness, your being, that’s not been touched. So you’re at home here? Well, there’s not enough of you there.’ And so it starts.
Author: Joseph CampbellYour life is the fruit of your own doing; you have no one to blame but yourself.
Author: Joseph CampbellLife is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it. The meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning.
Author: Joseph CampbellWhen we quit thinking primarily about ourselves and our own self-preservation, we undergo a truly heroic transformation of consciousness.
Author: Joseph CampbellIt is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.
Author: Joseph CampbellThe world is full of people who have stopped listening to themselves or have listened only to their neighbors to learn what they ought to do, how they ought to behave, and what the values are they should be living for.
Author: Joseph CampbellA hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.
Author: Joseph CampbellWe must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.
Author: Joseph CampbellOpportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.
