J. Carter Brown
J. Carter Brown (1934–2002) was an influential American museum director and arts administrator. Born on October 8, 1934, in Providence, Rhode Island, Brown served as the director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from 1969 to 1992. During his tenure, he played a key role in expanding the gallery’s collections and enhancing its reputation. Brown was also involved in cultural diplomacy and served as the chairman of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. Known for his passion for the arts, Brown left a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of the United States.
