Born in Chicago, Illinois, he graduated from Princeton University before joining the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot. Rumsfeld’s political career began in the 1960s, and he held various roles, including U.S. Congressman, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, and U.S. Ambassador to NATO under President Gerald Ford. Rumsfeld became Secretary of Defense for the first time under Ford in 1975. He returned to the position in 2001, serving under President George W. Bush during the September 11 attacks. His tenure was marked by controversy over the handling of the Iraq War and the treatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison.
